Background

The session on "Promoting Responsible Business Practices through Effective Remediation" will bring together key stakeholders from various sectors, with a particular focus on the extractive industries such as mining, and pulp and paper. While these industries are often associated with significant risks and challenges related to human rights and environmental impacts, they also have the opportunity to lead by example in adopting innovative and effective remediation strategies. Organized by the Foundation for International Human Rights Reporting Standards (FIHRRST), this session will explore how companies can not only address past grievances but also strengthen their reputation, enhance stakeholder trust, and create long-term value by aligning with international human rights standards. By committing to responsible practices, these sectors can contribute to sustainable development and demonstrate that profitability and ethical conduct can go hand in hand.

Objectives

The session seeks to create a platform for innovation and collaboration, encouraging companies from the extractive industries to engage in meaningful dialogue with stakeholders, including communities, governments, and civil society organizations. By fostering peer-to-peer learning, the session aims to identify and share best practices, helping companies innovate in their remediation efforts and ensuring that they can provide more effective and comprehensive solutions to the challenges they face.

Key questions
During the panel, key questions will focus on understanding the practical steps taken by companies to address human rights grievances and the challenges encountered. Specifically, questions will explore: What progress has been made in addressing grievances and complaints related to operations? And what lessons have been learned from these efforts? Additionally, the discussion will cover the role of international frameworks and domestic legislation by asking, how is compliance with both international standards and local laws ensured? Finally, to foster innovation and collaboration, panelists will be asked, what innovative strategies have been implemented to improve access to effective remedies, and what impacts have these had on operations?
Format

The panel will be structured as an interactive and dynamic discussion featuring representatives from companies. The session will begin with brief opening remarks by the moderator, who will outline the objectives of the discussion. This will be followed by a moderated dialogue with the panelists, where they will address key questions about their experiences, challenges, and innovative practices related to effective remediation. The panel will then open up to an interactive Q&A session, allowing the audience to engage directly with the panelists and contribute to the conversation. The session will conclude with closing remarks, summarizing key insights and highlighting recommendations for future action and collaboration.
