COLLABORATING PARTNER SESSION
24 September  |  12:30-14:00 ICT
Civil Society Dialogue with the Working Group on Business and Human Rights
Organized by:
  • UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights

Background

The session aims to foster a meaningful exchange between the Chairperson of the Working Group on Business and Human Rights (the Working Group), Ms Pichamon Yeophantong, and civil society stakeholders. The objectives of the session are twofold: (a) to provide detailed information on the UN Special Procedures’ complaints mechanism, and (b) to provide a space to facilitate an interactive dialogue between the Working Group and civil society representatives from the region, including regarding the implementation of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

In the first part of the session, participants will gain valuable insights into the UN Special Procedures’ complaints mechanism. This segment will shed light on how stakeholders affected by business-related human rights abuses can effectively utilize the Special Procedures mechanism to submit allegations to the Working Group as well as to other mandate holders. The Working Group will provide guidance to participants on navigating this crucial avenue for engaging with relevant actors and, when relevant, seeking accountability.

The second part of the session will allow for an interactive dialogue, which will provide a platform for civil society representatives to actively participate and share their on-the-ground experiences on business-related human rights issues. Through open and constructive discussions, civil society participants will have an opportunity to express their perspectives and provide feedback to the Working Group.

Objectives

The key objectives of this session are to:

  • Enhance understanding of the UN Special Procedures’ complaints mechanism and its relevance in addressing business-related human rights abuses;

  • Equip participants with practical knowledge and strategies for utilizing the Special Procedures mechanism effectively;

  • Foster direct engagement between the Working Group and civil society stakeholders;

  • Facilitate an exchange of diverse perspectives and experiences related to business and human rights issues; and

  • Identify challenges, opportunities, and potential solutions for strengthening collaboration between the Working Group and civil society.
