Accelerating the Integration of Labour Rights in Management Education in Asia-Pacific
Organized by:
  • International Labour Organization 8.7 Accelerator Lab

  • Global Business School Network

  • University of Geneva

  • Winrock International

Background

In June 2021 and June 2023, the International Labour Organization (ILO) organized dedicated sessions on the integration of labour rights and human rights in management education. Titled Reimagining Business School Education with Responsible Management and Human Rights and Building Labour Rights into Business Education, these events highlighted the critical importance of educating future business professionals on fundamental labour rights. Over the same period, the ILO signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Global Business School Network and the University of Geneva to build synergies, notably by developing standardized teaching material. For this edition of the #RBHR Forum, the ILO 8.7 Accelerator Lab is organizing a session on innovations from the Asia-Pacific region to accelerate efforts and disseminate responsible management education on labour rights to a growing audience.

About the Session

Integrating human rights in education is an integral part of the global, and regional effort, towards ensuring the effective implementation of the business and human rights framework. By capacitating faculty, administrators, and students of educational institutions, it is possible to nurture a growing generation of informed decision makers, sensitive to the promotion of labour and human rights in the world of work. This is notably important in the collective endeavor towards the enabling of effective remedy mechanisms for survivors of labour and human rights violations. The roundtable side-event brings together management education professionals, civil society and government representatives as well as BHR experts to discuss concrete actions, good practices, and ways forward.

Objectives

  • Present recently developed teaching material on “The Fair Recruitment of Migrant Workers” developed under the ILO-GBSN-UNIGE MoU.

  • Discuss innovations from the region to accelerate labour rights education, notably through partnerships between higher education institutions (HEIs) and collaborations between civil society organizations and HEIs.

  • Reflect on future steps, notably the establishement of regional alliances of business schools for sustainability

Key Questions

Panelists will reflect on the following questions:

  • How are business school students being educated on business and human rights challenges?

  • What are some of the existing innovations, notably to expand the offering of labour rights education, and how could these innovations be disseminated more widely?

  • What types of partnerships can be developed within the management education community and between the community and other stakeholders?
